Some are known for their entertainment. Others for their shopping, food, or atmosphere. After spending time as a vendor at the Kentucky Highland Renaissance Festival, one thing became immediately clear—this is a festival built around community.
As traveling vendors, we're fortunate to visit Renaissance Faires throughout the season. Every event has something unique to offer, but Kentucky Highland Renaissance Festival has created an environment where guests, performers, organizers, volunteers, and merchants genuinely seem excited to be there. That enthusiasm is contagious from the moment the gates open each morning.
Every vendor we met was welcoming, generous with their advice, and eager to help us feel at home. Before the event was over, we had even been invited to dinner (more than once)—a small gesture that perfectly captured the sense of community the Kentucky Highland Renaissance Festival has built over the years.

Nestled in the rolling hills of Kentucky, the festival grounds provide an ideal backdrop for a day of adventure.

Winding paths lead guests past artisan shops, food vendors, performers, and interactive experiences without ever feeling rushed or overcrowded. Whether you're attending for your very first Renaissance Faire or you're a seasoned faire-goer, the grounds invite you to wander and discover something new around every corner.
One of the first things visitors notice is that this isn't simply an open field with temporary tents. The Kentucky Highland Renaissance Festival has developed an impressive village filled with permanent buildings that create the feeling of stepping into another time. Visitors aren't simply browsing—they're genuinely curious. They ask questions about craftsmanship, history, and how items were traditionally used. Many come dressed in incredible costumes of their own, creating an immersive atmosphere that makes every weekend memorable.
It was great meeting so many guests who are excited to learn about Viking history, medieval culture, historical clothing, and traditional craftsmanship. Those conversations often become the highlight of our day.
One of the most exciting conversations we had all weekend centered around the festival's continued growth. Several longtime patrons told us they had attended for years and were thrilled to see the expansion into the new Viking field. Their enthusiasm wasn't just for the new area itself—it reflected genuine excitement about the future of the festival and everything still to come.
Entertainment Around Every Corner
No Renaissance Festival would be complete without outstanding entertainment, and Kentucky Highland delivers.
Throughout the day, music fills the grounds while talented performers, actors, and entertainers create an atmosphere that's both lively and welcoming. Whether you're cheering during a live performance, laughing with street characters, or simply enjoying the energy of the crowd, there's always something happening.
Every stage seemed to offer something different. Throughout the weekend we enjoyed performances from Hexxen, Celtic Nova, Nordanfolk, the Fortress Dwellers, and many other talented entertainers who kept the energy high from opening cannon to closing gate. The variety of music, comedy, storytelling, and interactive performances meant there was always something drawing a crowd.
Families with children, history enthusiasts, cosplay fans, and first-time visitors all seem to find something that keeps them engaged throughout the day.
A Festival That Feels Like Home
Perhaps the highest compliment we can give is this:
By the end of the weekend, it doesn't feel like you've simply attended another event—it feels like you've spent time with a community.
That sense of hospitality begins with the festival staff, extends through the volunteers and performers, and is reflected by the guests themselves. Everyone plays a role in creating an atmosphere where people genuinely enjoy spending time together.
One thing that impressed us throughout the weekend was how smoothly the event operated. Behind every successful Renaissance Festival are countless hours of planning, coordination, and hard work that most guests never see. From load-in to opening gate and throughout the weekend, it was obvious that a tremendous amount of care goes into creating an enjoyable experience for everyone involved.
Tips for First-Time Visitors

- Wear comfortable shoes—the village is larger than you think.
- Bring cash for artisan vendors, though many accept cards.
- Stay for the final performances—you'll be glad you did.
- Take time to explore every path because some of the best discoveries are tucked away from the main thoroughfares.
Oh, one more thing. Dress for the weather!! It can get very warm in Kentucky during the summer and we had our fair share of rain this year as well!
